Any urban study of 'The Big Village,' as the city of Jakarta is known, requires detailed knowledge of the ground. In our fieldwork in a kampung (village) near the Ciliwung River, undertaken with students from the University of Indonesia, the students made a rigorous house-by-house survey of ownership structure, supported by interviews and documented in detailed drawings. Through installing the three-dimensional network of lines in the space, the students could tell a more precise story of land use, flood resilience, and the history of land tenure within the kampung and throughout the Big Village.
