RESEARCH COORDINATOR
Tourism and Cultural Heritage: A Case Study on the Explorer Franz Junghuhn with
Philip Ursprung and Alex Lehnerer
ETH Future Cities Laboratory (FCL) Singapore
August 2015 - present

This three-year research project investigates the volcanoes of Java as sights of cultural and touristic production. We follow the 19th century explorer Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn, later known as the ‘Humboldt of Java,’ who under the Dutch administration climbed, drew and wrote prolifically about the volcanoes. As our imaginary guide, Junghuhn leads us on expeditions where we conduct field research along with other architects, artists, and scholars from art history, volcanology, literature, and philosophy.

As project coordinator, I design the expeditions while conducting my own research on representation of the volcano. Where Junghuhn gathered botanical samples for his herbarium, I collect imagery, artifacts, and narratives for my ‘Volcanarium.’ This source material informs my series of rigorous portraits, which will be included in the the final book and exhibitions.

Before transitioning to architecture, I had a decade-long career in graphic design. After working in agencies and in-house corporate design departments in Washington, D.C., Copenhagen, Denmark, and central North Carolina, I started and ran my own successful design business for six years. My work included branding, print, and web design for clients ranging from local nonprofits to Fortune 500 companies.
